Note that the calculator can calculate fractional exponents, but they must be entered into the calculator in decimal form. It uses both the rule displayed, as well as the rule for multiplying exponents with like bases discussed above. Shown below is an example with a fractional exponent where the numerator is not 1. When an exponent is a fraction where the numerator is 1, the n th root of the base is taken. Thus, the only way for a n to remain unchanged by multiplication, and this exponent law to remain true, is for a 0 to be 1. Shown below is an example of an argument for a 0=1 using one of the previously mentioned exponent laws. For many applications, defining 0 0 as 1 is convenient. When an exponent is 0, the result of the exponentiation of any base will always be 1, although someĭebate surrounds 0 0 being 1 or undefined. When an exponent is 1, the base remains the same. Similarly, when divided bases are raised to an exponent, the exponent is distributed to both bases. When multiplied bases are raised to an exponent, the exponent is distributed to both bases. When exponents are raised to another exponent, the exponents are multiplied. When exponents that share the same base are divided, the exponents are subtracted. When an exponent is negative, the negative sign is removed by reciprocating the base and raising it to the positive exponent. When exponents that share the same base are multiplied, the exponents are added. It also does not accept fractions, but can be used to compute fractional exponents, as long as the exponents are input in their decimal form. The calculator above accepts negative bases, but does not compute imaginary numbers. In the case where n is a positive integer, exponentiation corresponds to repeated multiplication of the base, n times. Their style of music is more along the lines of Eurodisco than the American version, and it opened up the doors for so much of the electronic, dance, and house music that flooded the airwaves from the 80's up to today.ĪBBA's enjoyed some of the biggest successes of any disco band, releasing hit after hit throughout the 70s and 80s. ABBAĪBBA is often associated with pop music rather than with disco, but its roots in disco music are undeniable. The popularity of the movie and the songs catapulted the group to a new level of fame. They eventually buried the hatchet and reformed their band in the 1970s, taking their music in a more R&B direction.īy the late 70s, the Bee Gees' career was chugging along nicely, but they had no idea that a life-changing opportunity was right around the corner their participation in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was transformative for the band's career. They achieved substantial success and continued performing until internal bickering, and other issues led to their breakup. The Bee Gees started as a relatively typical British boy band of the era. Sadly, she passed away in 2012, but her legacy in disco music will remain. With a sweet, angelic soprano, and the ability to moan and coo in a sexy way, Summers became one of the genre's top voices and carried her career into the mid-2010s. Songs like “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girl,” and “Love To Love you Baby” are just a few of her many successes. It seemed like everything she touched turned to gold, cranking out hit after hit and soaring to the top of the charts repeatedly. Donna Summerĭonna Summer was the Queen of Disco in the mid-through-late '70s. Some lasted through the ages, and others were one-hit wonders. An example of this is in Lipps, Inc.'s 1980 hit Funkytown. It's usually something simple that people can sing along with and be moved by.īecause disco songs tend to have fewer lyrics, many disco hooks appear throughout the song many times over and are often accompanied by a strong instrumental hook, making the lyrics and instrumental elements equally prominent. A hook is usually a phrase repeated again and again throughout the song, and it should express the theme or main idea of the song. The hook is normally part of the song's chorus and often is in the song's title. While a hook isn't always lyrical – there are lyrical, melodic, rhythmic, and instrumental hooks, too – lyrics usually play a role in creating a memorable hook for a song. Whatever the lyrics of a disco song, it needs a strong hook that people will remember. Mainly, the words tend to be about dancing, sex, love, and partying, which makes sense for a genre that is meant to make people move their bodies and have fun. Lyrically, disco music tends to be fairly simple, and you won't find much deep or mystical poetry within most famous disco songs. Horns in disco songs tend to have a big, brassy sound, and while you rarely hear a horn solo in a disco, the horns work together as part of the music to provide the lively, energetic sound that calls people to the dance floor. HornsĪ hearty horn section is another element of disco borrowed from its predecessor, funk. Synthesizers are all over disco music, and the genre was one of the first popular forms of music to consistently utilize these electronic musical devices. Electro-strings are string sounds produced by a synthesizer keyboard. Without strings, you couldn't achieve many of the soaring, romantic moments in disco songs.Įlectro-strings are another aspect commonly used in disco. These instruments helped add depth and emotion to the musical compositions. Other string instruments also frequently appear in discos, including violins, violas, and cellos. In this style, the player uses a light squeeze-and-release motion on the frets to produce a rhythmic clanking sound. This effect – which disco adopted from funk music – is created by using a particular pedal that distorts the guitar's sound to achieve this whiny tone.Ī guitar style sometimes referred to as “chicken scratch” is another foundation of disco guitar. If you listen to disco music, you'll also likely notice the “wah Wah” effect in many prominent songs. The bass guitars play an important role in the disco, keeping the songs' rhythm. The guitars in disco had a somewhat unusual sound for the era when the genre became popular. You can hear this beat in many other forms of dance music today. This beat springs from Latin dance music styles such as merengue. That style is characterized by a rhythmic pattern that sounds four quarter notes consecutively in a 4/4 musical measure. A heavy bass drum beatĭisco is known for its use of a strong bass drum beat, performed in a “four on the floor” style. Read on to learn more about the unique characteristics of disco. There are several characteristics of disco music that make it distinctive and easily recognizable. Source: Article "Lorie (singer)" from Wikipedia in English, licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0. To write the sequel scene, Lucas went to the source, locating retired screenwriter David Duncan in Washington state. Next, the film shows how the Time Machine prop was created and the ways it has been put to use over the years, including details about its painstaking restoration.īut third and most endearingly, “Time Machine: The Journey Back” includes a 13-minute sequel featuring three of the original’s actors, penned by its original writer. First, special effects wizards Wah Chang and Gene Warren describe how they achieved the 1960 movie’s Oscar-winning special effects. The documentary, filmed in June 1992, has three key segments. When they met again in the 1990s, Burns “started to tell me about the places the Machine had been, and that’s how we came up with the concept of making the (documentary),” Lucas said in a Starlog magazine article, January 1994. One of the people who saw the Time Machine at Burns’ house in the mid-1970s was Clyde Lucas. Their work paid off when the Time Machine became the centerpiece for Burns’ annual Halloween show in 1976, with a delighted George Pal in attendance. Fontana, Tom Scherman and Lynn Barker work on the chair for the restoration of the Time Machine prop in 1976. In a screen capture from the documentary, D.C. Parts of the Machine were missing or damaged, but Burns had the aid of blueprints from George Pal and a restoration team that included special effects artist Tom Scherman and renowned “Star Trek” script writer Dorothy (D.C.) Fontana, among many others. He had been immensely outbid on the prop at the MGM auction, but the Time Machine was his at last. After years as a traveling sideshow attraction, it was discovered in shabby condition in a thrift store in Orange County, California.Įnter film historian, collector and performer Bob Burns. The prop was sold at the infamous MGM auction in 1970. The Time Machine also had quite an odyssey, as detailed in the documentary. The allure of the Time Machine remained a constant in his life as he moved toward a career in filmmaking. The project was the brainchild of Clyde Lucas, a producer/director/composer who first saw “The Time Machine” at a drive-in theater at the age of nine. “ Time Machine: The Journey Back” (1993) is a 48-minute documentary narrated by Rod Taylor and featuring many of the creative and technical geniuses behind “The Time Machine.” Part 2 will look at the making of a sequel scene within a 1993 documentary directed by Clyde Lucas.Īnd because this part became longer than I expected, there will be a Part 3 that describes Rod Taylor’s own notes and ideas for a sequel film. The film was produced in 1993 for airing on PBS stations.Part 1 of this series explored director George Pal’s efforts to follow up his 1960 version of “The Time Machine” with a sequel. Time Machine: The Journey Back is a combination documentary short-sequel to George Pal's 1960 film The Time Machine, hosted by Time Machine star Rod Taylor and produced and directed by Clyde Lucas.
This way, each group complements the following group. It includes a six group rotation plan, rotating counterclockwise. It groups plants into five crops, although the allium group is a little small and may pose a problem when they rotate to a larger bed, although it would be easy to pair them with salad greens to bolster the size growing group. This plan uses a distinct crop rotation and makes use of herb and flower borders to help with pest control. Herbs and flowers border as pest control plan This would give four distinct groups to rotate: the brassicas, the leafy greens, the peppers, and the root crops. In this plan there has been an attempt to group some crops, although I would have grown the lettuces, spinach and chards together to keep the green leafy vegetables in one bed. It is easy to see that moving each group each year in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction would successfully rotate the crops. It’s got influences from all the previous on-screen incarnations, successfully blending them into a unified Batmobile that’s definitely not something you’d see any conventional army using during combat, but it isn’t complete comic book fantasy.” “Not quite the militarised tank of the Tumbler and not quite as stylised as Adam West’s ride, the new Batmobile is somewhere in between. The newest on-screen Batmobile, as seen in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” is a “balance between the sublime and the ridiculous, which we are certainly fans of,” said Tom Baker at. Christopher Nolan added the Batpod, a motorcycle that Batman uses as an escape pod during a famous chase scene with Joker. Specifically, the 2008 version that appeared in “The Dark Knight” really blew minds. The Tumbler upset some Batman purists, but for the most part, the military take on the Caped Crusader’s ride made a bold statement, and it was a complete game changer. When Bruce Wayne sees it, he only has one question for Lucius Fox: “Does it come in black?” It certainly did. “Batman Begins” in 2005 represents a turn for the better. Other than that, the car is all style with very little substance. First, it was designed to pay homage to the Delahayes of the 1930s and, second, it was real. Luckily, it was destroyed halfway through “Batman Forever.” The Batmobile of 1997 is better than the previous monstrosity for only two reasons, Miller added. The clunker came complete with lights under the car and rims. As for the Batmobile of 1995, it is easily the worst Batmobile ever designed by human hands – or the devil’s hands, according to Tom Baker at. “It’s a car that is bold and yet mysterious, which is a quality that no other Batmobile embodies,” said Rudie Obias at, who placed this Batmobile at the top of his list. But for many fans, it pales in comparison to the 1989 Burton Batmobile, the first truly futuristic design with bat wings on the back, a turbine engine on the nose, and relatively simple but potent gadgets. “Hollywood legend George Barris was given so little time to make the car that he took a decade-old concept car, the Lincoln Futura, made what really amounted to just a few minor cosmetic changes, and made history,” he said. Contrary to popular belief, the circa-1966 original Batmobile was not the first of its kind, but it is undoubtedly the most important, according to Aaron Miller at. When John finally tells her he loves her, she offers herself to him. Lenina, meanwhile, is increasingly preoccupied with thoughts of John, but she can't figure out if John likes her or not. John befriends Helmholtz, reading him Shakespeare while Helmholtz reads him verses that he’s composed himself. As John's friend and guide, Bernard becomes popular-but when John refuses to appear at one of Bernard's parties, the guests turn on Bernard, whom they were indulging only in order to meet the Savage. But he is troubled by the World State, especially because Linda has drugged herself into a happy stupor with soma. John, "the Savage," is a hit in London society. Indeed, the public scandal of having fathered a child forces the Director to resign. Bernard, though, plots to publicly humiliate the Director in revenge for his threat of exile. John is overwhelmed by Lenina's beauty and, when Bernard offers to take him and Linda back to London, exultant at the prospect of seeing the “brave new world” for himself. Bernard realizes that Linda is the woman who got separated from the Director, and that John is their son. In the Reservation, after watching some unnerving Indian rituals, Bernard and Lenina meet a young, Shakespeare-quoting “savage” named John, and his mother, Linda. Bernard thinks the Director is bluffing, but just before entering the Reservation, he finds out from Helmholtz that the Director is serious. Embarrassed to have let slip such information, the Director threatens to reassign Bernard to Iceland. The Director signs a permit to allow Bernard to visit the Savage Reservation with Lenina, and as he does so, he reminisces about his own trip to the Reservation 20 years earlier: there was a storm, and his female companion disappeared. Bernard is miserably aware that he is the only person who didn’t find the Service fulfilling. After taking soma, the 12 attendees engage in solidarity chants, working themselves into an ecstatic frenzy as they call out to “our Ford” and then collapse in an orgy. While Lenina goes on her date with Henry, Bernard attends his biweekly Solidarity Service. Bernard is dissatisfied because he is self-conscious about being small, while Helmholtz is so exceptional at everything he does that he’s begun to feel stifled. Bernard then visits his friend Helmholtz Watson. Later, in the elevator, Lenina accepts Bernard's invitation to accompany him to the Savage Reservation in New Mexico. Acknowledging the need to become more promiscuous, Lenina decides to also date Bernard Marx, even though he is a bit small and strange for an alpha.īernard, meanwhile, is outraged as he listens to Henry Foster and another man have a perfectly “normal” discussion about "having" Lenina. In the Hatchery changing rooms, Lenina Crowne, a nurse, is criticized by her friend Fanny for only dating one man, Henry Foster. He lectures the students on the World State's creation and its success in creating happiness and stability by eliminating from society all intense emotions, desires, and relationships. The students and the Director get a special treat when Mustapha Mond, one of the 10 World Controllers, joins the tour. The Director calls such conditioning “the secret to all happiness and virtue.” Each caste is conditioned differently, but all castes are conditioned to seek instant gratification, to be sexually promiscuous, to engage in economic consumption, and to use the drug soma to escape from all unpleasant experiences. The Director also shows how each individual is conditioned both before and after "birth" to conform to the moral rules of the World State and to enjoy his or her predetermined job. The Director shows how the five castes of World State society are created, from Alphas and Betas, who lead the society, down to the physically and intellectually inferior Deltas, Gammas, and Epsilons, who do menial labor. The Director of the Central London Hatcheries leads a group of students on a tour of the facilities, where babies are produced and grown in bottles (birth is non-existent in the World State). |
